Glenrothes born Cora Bissett is a talented and influential figure in the world of theatre and film. Her work as an actress, director, filmmaker and playwright has made a lasting impression on the performing arts scene, both in Scotland and beyond.

Cora will impart her knowledge and experience in this workshop specifically focused on honing auditioning skills for actors. It is designed to provide actors with techniques, insights, and practical tips to improve their audition performances and increase their chances of success in the casting process.

In sixteenth-century Europe women’s voices were suppressed and silenced. Even for a queen like Mary, her prime duty was to bear sons. In an age when textiles expressed power, Mary exploited them to emphasise her female agency. From her lavishly embroidered gowns as the prospective wife of the French Dauphin to the fashion dolls she used to encourage a Marian style at the Scottish court and the subversive messages she embroidered in captivity for her supporters, Mary used textiles to advance her political agenda, affirm her royal lineage and tell her own story.

In this talk, held in the appropriate setting of Dunfermline’s award winning craft shop Buttons and Blethers, Clare Hunter exquisitely blends history, politics and memoir. Clare lives near Stirling. Her debut book Threads of Life was a Radio 4 Book of the Week and winner of the Saltire First Book of the Year.

Free, drop in performance of Bach’s collection of majestic sonatas and partitas, rarely heard in their entirety. For Outwith, American baroque violinist Benjamin Shute will play them from memory amid the sublime acoustic of Dunfermline Abbey. You are welcome to catch a few moments of them as you go about your day or stay and soak up the whole experience.

Benjamin Shute (DMA, BM, New England Conservatory; Diplom KA, Hochschule für Musik Freiburg) has enjoyed a multifaceted career as modern and period violinist, musicologist, composer, and teacher.

Since his concerto debut as a teenager at the Opening Night Gala of the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, he has collaborated as soloist with modern- and period-instrument orchestras in the States and Europe and has appeared in recital all over the world.

CD recordings include “In Sara Levy’s Salon” with the Raritan Players (period instruments), the complete piano-violin sonatas of Brahms with pianist Kai-Ching Chang, and the violin-piano sonatas of Karén Khanagov with Anastasia Abu Bakar.

Currently teaching at the University of St Andrews Music Centre, Ben previously held posts at the Oklahoma City University Oklahoma Baptist Unviersity, and Dickinson College, as well as positions at the New England Conservatory, Cairn University, and Cecil College.

In their first visit to Outwith, Bearfoot Comedy Club presents an impressive line up of top quality comedians.

Jay Lafferty is an award winning performer with international, TV and radio credits who has been listed as one of the top ten acts at the Fringe.

Compere Viv Gee was a finalist in So You Think You’re Funny and the BBC Open Mic Awards and since then has performed comedy from LA to Bangkok as well as making multiple TV appearances.

In this workshop, the artist and musician Coral Rose Kindred-Boothby (@thesilverfield) will lead you through the process of wiring together a handful of very basic electronic components to create a working sound-maker which can be tuned to different frequencies (without soldering!)

We will also explore a few different ways of changing the pitch of this oscillator; including using graphite (pencil lead) to draw our own resistors, and light- dependent resistors to make the pitch change with different levels of light.

You will be taught some fundamentals of electronics and sound, and will each leave with a working circuit which is also a leaflet explaining all the concepts covered in the workshop.

To save her father from death in the army, a young maiden secretly goes in his place and becomes one of China’s greatest heroines in the process.

Colin Maxwell has recently been announced as a Scots Language Publication Awardee and for Outwith leads a workshop in which he shares his top tips for creating comic strips. Colin’s project, The Dunfermline Story, is a comic book in Scots language celebrating Dunfermline’s new status as a City (2022) and commemorating the 400th anniversary of the great fire of Dunfermline (2024). Featuring the artwork of many artists, the book will start at the time of King Malcom III and Queen Margaret, and cover significant people and events in the city, including the linen industry, Andrew Carnegie, Robert the Bruce, Dunfermline Athletic Football Club, the Great Fire of 1624, and modern day celebrities such as Barbara Dickson, Ncuti Gatwa and Big Country.

Colin’s imprint Maximized Comics has been an independent publisher of comics since 2014, creating comics in multiple genres, but specialising in historical stories and characters.

Cutting Edge Theatre is back at Outwith festival with another fantastic variety performance from their INSPIRE drama group. Come along for an afternoon of inspirational and entertaining short performances of singing, dancing and acting. Not to be missed!

When was the last time you looked up when walking past the City Chambers? If you did you will have seen King Malcolm or Queen Margaret looking down at you. Did you know the Fire Station Creative building was built by the same architects as the Memorial Hall built to celebrate Andrew Carnegie’s memory? Which more modern building was voted ‘Best Building in Scotland?’ Looking up and looking down will generate memories and discussion on this walk as it visits significant locations and buildings linked to Dunfermline city’s architectural landmarks.

A selection of beautiful music played on original instruments throughout the day in the atmospheric setting of Pittencrieff House by the Scottish Early Music Forum. Drop in any time throughout the day and feel free to ask the musicians questions about the music and their instruments.

Francis Macdonald, who drums for Glasgow’s Teenage Fanclub, has ventured into visual art, drawing portraits of people who inspire him. His first ever solo exhibition will be on display in The Workshop space next to Abbot House, in Dunfermline, during the Outwith Festival 2023.

Francis’ range of portraits include cultural icons such as Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Shane McGowan, Monserrat Caballé, Oliver Reed and more.

“I’ve enjoyed finding out about this side of myself. I take inspiration from all sorts of people – Quentin Blake, Willie Sutherland, Harry Pye, Stuart Murphy, John Byrne, the late Alasdair Gray, Picasso, Matisse. I value JD Fergusson’s suggestion to “never correct a sketch, just make another… keep at it.”

Francis also composes music for film and television. He has worked with an eclectic range of artists including Alex Chilton, Dan Penn, Kevin Ayers, Edwyn Collins, Ian McCulloch, Laura Cantrell, Belle & Sebastian, Camera Obscura, Max Richter, The Vaselines, Julie Fowlis, The Scottish Festival Orchestra and soloists from Scottish Ensemble.

In January 2022, aged 51 and with the encouragement of some artist pals, Francis began drawing portraits in pencil and sharing them on-line. Positive feedback unlocked more confidence. He now makes some time every day to create art using different media including charcoal, watercolour, ink and wash and oil pastels.

“More than anything I’ve discovered the joy of drawing and the priceless value of an encouraging word or a pat on the back.”

Francis’ exhibition, ‘Everyday Art’, will run until Sunday September 10th, throughout the Outwith Festival.

The Fife Pilgrim Way is a new long distance route opened in July 2019, connecting West Fife with East Fife via routes used by medieval pilgrims. The overall route brings together a network of existing paths, tracks, core paths and rights of way into a single journey across the heart of Fife.

For 400 years, St Andrews was one of the main pilgrimage destinations in Medieval Europe. Rich and poor flocked to be near the bones of St Andrew, one of Jesus’ disciples. This was considered to be the next best thing to being in the Holy Land and walking in the footsteps of Jesus himself. Therefore, St Andrews joined ranks in terms of importance with the popular disciple destinations of Rome (St Peter) and Santiago de Compostela (St James the Great).

St Andrews may have been the main attraction. But pilgrims were also drawn to Dunfermline to visit St Margaret’s miraculous shrine within the abbey. A host of other saints were represented by churches, chapels and healing wells along the road to St Andrews. These provided perfect places to pause, as well as important destinations in their own right for local pilgrims.

Pilgrimage made a permanent mark on Fife’s landscape. Many of its roads, bridges and crossing points, including the famous Queen’s Ferry, were created hundreds of years ago to ease the way for the steady stream of pilgrims. Inns, chapels and alms houses were also built to offer the travellers a place to rest, refresh and receive medical help. Providing these facilities was considered an act of piety that helped to smooth the path to Heaven. Pilgrimage changed the face of Fife forever and earned it the nickname of the ‘Pilgrim Kingdom’. The Fife Pilgrim Way follows one of the routes taken by countless pilgrims to Scotland’s holy hotspot.

He’s been part of the BBC Comedy Room, the first BBC Writersroom Scottish Voices group and BAFTA Connect. Sitcom is Steve’s great passion and he is delighted to be bringing top tips for killer comedy to this unique masterclass for Outwith.

Victoria Mackenzie’s novel For Thy Great Pain Have Mercy on My Little Pain was a Guardian Book of the Week and has been heaped with critical praise. For Outwith, Victoria – who lives in Crail – will deliver a creative writing workshop in which she shares her secrets for creating historical fiction.

As the war rages in Ukraine, refugees and expats are collaborating with Scots to deliver an extravaganza of cultural experiences that include live music, cuisine and heart-rending stories at Dunfermline Abbey.

Event organiser, Svitlana Iniakoviene, whose brother is on the frontline, calls on the good people of Fife to support this event. She says, “We are proud to present a collaboration between Ukrainian refugees and Scottish people, the remarkable chefs and artists who are joining hands for a greater purpose.”

At the interval, the essence of Ukrainian cuisine will be showcased; Ukrainian pies, Kyiv cake, traditional desserts and sandwiches will all be available.

Later on visitors can hear classical, folk, rock and pop music by Ukrainian and European composers. Artists include guitarist Peter Adams, vocalists Vika Yasynska, Lofgreen, Freya Nicoll, violinist Mary Grabenko, pianist Kristina Avalyan and more

Award winning poet and performer Kevin P. Gilday returns to Outwith to deliver a spoken word performance with Q&A for budding poets. Kevin has performed all over the world, from Hollywood to East Kilbride, including major festivals (BBC 6Music Festival, Glastonbury), Fringes (Edinburgh, Toronto, Vancouver) as well as large scale tours of the UK, Germany, Canada and the US. He has supported artists and public figures such as Akala, Saul Williams, George the Poet, Jackie Kay, Liz Lochhead, Sage Francis, The Silencers and Jeremy Corbyn MP.

In 2020 the world changed forever as character actor and comedian Kieran Hodgson moved to Scotland. Now the three-time Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee comes to Dunfermline from his home in Glasgow to tell you how it’s working out. Kieran is known not only for his role as Gordon in BBC’s ‘Two Doors Down’ but his viral Youtube impressions of entire TV series such as The Crown and Happy Valley. In Big in Scotland he gives a virtuoso, one man performance that is not to be missed.

Step into a time machine and experience the explosive era of Fife’s punk scene with “Kingdom Come 1977-1978″- an exhibition you won’t want to miss!

In the late 1970’s, Dunfermline was at the centre of Fife’s thriving music scene. Fife’s first music punkzine, Kingdom Come, was created by local music enthusiast Johnny Waller. With nothing more than a typewriter, scissors, paste, Letraset and a photocopier, Johnny and his friends brought the burgeoning punk/new wave music scene in Dunfermline to new audiences, helping to connect, inspire and celebrate punk and new wave music in Fife.

The first ever issue of Kingdom Come was published on September 29th 1977, and was available to purchase (for the princely sum of 15 pence per copy) in a variety of outlets, often record shops. There were at least seventeen issues published between 1977 and 1979.

This enlightening exhibition at Dunfermline Carnegie Library and Galleries unveils large scale reproductions of the original zine pages, featuring first-hand reviews, striking photos and hand-drawn comic strips. This exhibition promises to transport you back to that electric period in our local history.

Pioneering female tour manager Kim Hawes slept underneath Lemmy from Motorhead – on a tour bus – feuded with Black Sabbath, tripped mushrooms with Hawkwind, faced down the Hells Angels, threw Madonna off stage and dealt with Chumbawamba drenching John Prescott.

Through hard work, hard drinking and hard times, Kim hurled a TV through the glass ceiling of the male-dominated music industry, carving out a place for women in a largely man’s world.

‘Manana Inciertos’, which means Uncertain Tomorrows, is a network of artists and curators from Dunfermline, London, Berlin and Bilbao. Events organised for Outwith Festival is their third collaboration. This exhibition is co-curated by Txema Agiriano (Bilbao), Liane Lang (Berlin) and Ian Moir (Dunfermline).

At the opening of this exhibition, there will be three live performances from the following artists:

Perfromance 1 – Liane Lang, Philipp Schlotter & Monika Öchsler

Artists Liane Lang, Philipp Schlotter and Monika Öchsler have developed their live performance Aggregate from its last iteration at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao for the Outwith Festival. Including video projection, live sound on an ancient zither using horse hair and a stint of live body casting, the work explores the difference between natural and artificial, a distinction separating humans from their environment. Quarry cliffs and re-natured mining areas are seen through 50 million year old slices of crystal, fossilised water. Pours of molten bronze, ancient wheels and modern turbines spin across altered landscapes, rock faces tentatively occupied by sculptures that look almost, but not totally human. The artwork explores the possibility of feeling and becoming part of the natural world, to enter deep time and understand our place in the universe before we become part of the fossil record.

Performance 2 – Miren Barrena Rebe works with performance, video and sculpture. She uses material such as gypsum, plaster and found objects. Parallel to her artistic work, she trained at the circus.

Performance 3 – Javier Rodríguez Pérez-Curiel . “Body ext” is a performance that takes place by joining the telephones of the attendees receiving the same broadcast made by the artist. Its score is a sound poem to recite together, it is an image and not an image at the same time.

Sean Logan is a self-taught composer and multi-instrumentalist whose relationship with music has been integral in overcoming the challenges of life on the autistic spectrum.

Sean was recently a finalist on The Piano, the Channel 4 competition hosted by Claudia Winkleman and judged by popstar Mika and world-renowned pianist Lang Lang.

Get ready to be mesmerised by Sean’s extraordinary talent as he showcases his mastery of the piano through a showcase that combines life and art.

Kathleen Jamie’s work is rooted in Scottish landscape and culture and ranges through travel, women’s issues, archaeology and visual art. Jamie has won the Forward Poetry Prize, the Scottish Book of the Year Award and Costa poetry award. Her non-fiction writings are considered influential works of nature and landscape, winning the John Burroughs Medal and the Orion Book Award. Jamie writes occasional essays and reviews for the London Review of Books and The Guardian and has a poem inscribed on the national monument at Bannockburn. In 2021, Jamie was appointed as the fourth holder of the title of Scots Makar.

Dr Peter Mackay is a Senior Lecturer in Literature in the School of English at the University of St Andrews. Originally from the Isle of Lewis, he is an expert in Scottish and Irish literature from 1800 onwards, and especially in Scottish Gaelic literature. He has written two monographs and has won the Donald Meek Prize for Gaelic literature, the Saltire Scottish Research Book of the Year and the Duais Ruaraidh MhicThòmais in 2021. His poetry collections were shortlisted for the Saltire Scottish Poetry Book of the Year and the Highland Book Prize. Mackay is a frequent broadcaster on Radio 3 and BBC Radio nan Gàidheal.

Outwith has always featured an ambitious and entertaining film programme and attracted filmmakers such as Gregory Burke and John Maclean to come and talk about their work. This year is no exception. In our inaugural short film festival we are showing a selection of brilliant, original, UK-made short films. The evening will also feature a Q&A with film maker Cora Bissett and a chance to network with fellow filmmakers in the city’s creative hub, The Fire Station.

In this fun workshop led by artist Katie Strachan, we will take inspiration from artist Barbara Hepworth to create our own mini Abstract Sculptures out of soap.

An hour long workshop for budding young musicians that will delve into pop melodies, song structure and how to create your own sound.

Additional performance tips on how you take the audience with you, how to plan your set and engage the listener.

and language development. Through signing, singing and sensory play, we

before they can talk and sometimes from only weeks old! Our sessions

provide a mix of useful signs, such as ‘milk’ and ‘food’, and fun signs

for things like toys, animals and vehicles – all to support early

language and literacy.

The Origin is a palaeolithic horror film shot in the Highlands. The film, which received its Scottish premiere at this year’s Glasgow Film Festival, shows a tribe of early humans arriving in a desolate new land where a scarcity of food and a mysterious nocturnal threat decimates their numbers and fuels paranoia, distrust and hatred among those left alive.

The magical woodland garden of Wooers’ Alley in Dunfermline was once the home of artist Sir Joseph Noël Paton, painter to Queen Victoria. It inspired his extraordinary fairy paintings in the Scottish National Galleries.

Now, after 100 years of the garden being forgotten and overgrown, the fairies are returning… This historical tour of the Wee Glen will explore how this long neglected part of Dunfermline, now prone to extensive littering and anti-social behaviour, was once not only a key part of Dunfermline’s heritage, but a place of national importance in Scotland’s art, culture and archaeology.

Tommy Smith, a presence on the international jazz scene since his teenage years, has record edwith the definitive jazz label, Blue Note and worked with jazz greats including Chick Corea, Jaco Pastorius, John Scofield, Randy Brecker and Jack DeJohnette.

His compositions and work as a soloist extend to the symphonic arena, with albums including Modern Jacobite with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. He is also the founding director of the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra which he has built into a world class, award-winning big band whose collaborations include tributes to Weather Report, with drummer Peter Erskine, and Frank Sinatra, with Kurt Elling, new works for jazz orchestra and Japanese taiko drummers .

As well as touring and recording with his own groups, including Tommy Smith Quartet: Embodying the Light in dedication to John Coltrane, and playing duo concerts with pianist Peter Johnstone, Smith tours the world with Norwegian double bass master Arild Anderson’s trio, which records for the prestigious ECM label and is widely regarded as one of the leading groups working in jazz today.

In 2019 Smith was awarded the OBE for services to jazz and education, adding to honorary doctorates from the University of Edinburgh and Caledonian University, Glasgow and a professorship from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where he founded and leads the internationally admired jazz course.

Smith’s solo saxophone concerts feature entirely acoustic performances of spontaneously chosen melodies drawn from the jazz, folk and praise song traditions and highlight his wonderful tone reproduction and consummate improvising capabilities in an intimate conversation with the audience.

Outwith’s annual under 18 showcase is the only opportunity for young people to perform live music as part of the festival so come along to the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum to support them enjoy local budding singer-songwriters and musicians experiencing their first taste of live performance.
